Maurits Thayer

Maurits Thayer

Maurits Thayer grew up working in the natural gas fields of the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming.  He attended the University of Wyoming where he graduated with honors and obtained a B.S. in geology and a minor in mathematics.  He went on to attend Arizona State University for his M.S. degree in geology where he field mapped an extensive and important part of the active San Andreas Fault zone in central California for his thesis.

Maurits then began working as a geologist for a major oil and gas company in Midland and Houston, Texas.  He was assigned various technical roles within several different asset teams that covered most of the Rocky Mountain basins as well as the Permian Basin.  He served in a wide range of assignments that included operations geology, development geology, volumetric resource assessment, seismic interpretation, geomodelling, and many other responsibilities.  He was blessed to be exposed to an abundance of challenges, data, techniques, and quality people during this time.

Maurits has always enjoyed the outdoors, and in fact this was his primary reason for entering into the field of geology.  He felt a strong pull back toward the Rocky Mountains, so in 2013 he moved to Denver and set up his own consulting business.  During this time, he has worked as a consulting geologist for various small companies on a wide range of projects primarily in the intermontane basins of the Rocky Mountains.  Mau’s passion for geology, advanced technical knowledge, and practicality from his upbringing provide a unique skill set within the oil and gas industry.

Maurits is a family man and loves spending time with his wife and young son. Maurits also enjoys being active and perhaps has too many hobbies. These include fly-fishing, backpacking, telemark skiing, team roping, swimming, and motorcycles. Mau would like to own his own ranch and backhoe someday…
